FAQs

Q?How do I enroll in a GLN class?
A.

Taking a GLN class is as easy as 1, 2, 3!

  1. Choose a class based on our Class Schedule for the particular semester
  2. Submit a class request through your GLN account during an open registration period
  3. If selected from the Class Lottery, place your $120 refundable deposit and $80 non-refundable registration fee and you are all set!
Q?How do you determine who enrolls in a GLN class?
A.

Our classes are open to anyone over 18 who is able to commute to a class location! Since some of our classes are in high-demand and receive many class requests, we devised a Class Lottery system through which everyone has an equal chance to get a spot in a class. We also have Priority Registration for our teachers, volunteers, GLNsiders, continuing students and partners. Finally, if you are interested in taking a class that is not “Foreigner”, you have to place in that class via our online placement questionnaire. Read more about our course levels here.

Q?I got waitlisted! Now what?
A.

We receive anywhere between 50 and 200 class requests for our high demand classes. We are able to enroll 20 learners and place another 20 on the waitlist. If you were waitlisted, that means you are one of 20 (or less) people who might be able to get a spot in the class if any of the originally selected students don’t place a deposit OR drop the class. Look out for an email before classes start.

Q?When do I place my class deposit?
A.

Only learners selected through the Class Lottery are able to place a deposit. Be sure to submit a class request during the registration period. After that stay put and look out for an email from GLN with your class status. Should you be selected, we will ask you to place your $120 deposit and $80 non-refundable registration fee to confirm your enrollment. Follow the instructions in that email and place your deposit by the specified deadline.

Q?How do I know if I am enrolled in a class?
A.

We do things differently at GLN! To provide everyone with a fair chance to take a class of their choice, we designed a Class Lottery because we see an exceedingly high demand for certain languages like Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and others. Once you submit a class request during a certain registration period, just stay put and wait for an email with your class status!

Q?How do I contact a GLN teacher?
A.

For privacy reasons we do not reveal our Teaching Fellows’ contact information to the community as a whole. Once you are enrolled in a GLN class, we will send you an email with your teacher’s contact information (as well as other important class logistics).

Q?Do I have to buy class materials?
A.

We do not use textbooks or workbooks because we focus on oral communication and on keeping the cost low for everyone interested in learning. Our Teaching Fellows prepare and distribute materials. While you are not expected to buy anything, you are expected to spend time outside of class doing “homefun” and engaging with the language. We do not want you to make a huge financial investment, but we do want you to invest time because learning a language takes time!

Q?Can I switch to a different class?
A.

Our goal is to provide you with an enjoyable and rewarding experience. If you find your class level too easy/difficult, we will try to move you to a different class if such is offered. We could also switch you to an entirely different language IF the class you wish to switch to has available spots. Please note that you can switch classes BEFORE the second week of class so sign up early and plan accordingly!

Q?How do I get back my class deposit?
A.

To be eligible for a deposit refund, you may miss no more than two classes in a given semester. At the end of the semester, we will send you an email with instructions on how to claim your deposit (if eligible). We return deposits via PayPal or a check in the mail.

Q?Can I drop a GLN class?
A.

You can drop a class only before the SECOND class meeting to receive a refund on your $120 deposit. Please note that the $80 registration fee is non-refundable.

Q?What does a “Foreigner” or a “Tourist” class mean?
A.

We are different from most language-learning organizations as we use a communicative approach which focuses on building our learners’ verbal communication skills. We have designed a theme-based curriculum that corresponds to our learners’ needs. Our courses’ names suggest the theme for the course and the approximate language proficiency required. Read more about each level.

Q?Why can’t I see the exact location of the class I am interested in?
A.

For privacy reasons we only include the neighborhood or intersection where classes are scheduled to take place. Enrolled learners will receive the full address in an email and will also be able to see the address in their GLN accounts. We provide the neighborhood on the website so that you can plan your travel to a class.

Q?Where do GLN classes take place?
A.

GLN partners with various organizations throughout the DC area who give us classroom space. GLN partners include universities, other non-profits, public schools or private companies. The majority of our class locations are metro accessible. See the list of partners and locations here.

Q?Can I take more than one class per semester?
A.

Yes. GLNers can register for up to three classes per semester, although they must be in three different languages (i.e., they cannot be three levels of a single language.) After registration, students will be notified of which classes they have been accepted to and can enroll in as many of those classes as they wish.

Q?What happens if I miss a class?
A.

As a way of encouraging its students to attend class, GLN uses a deposit incentive system: students submit a refundable $120 deposit when they enroll in a GLN class. They are then allowed to miss up to two classes per semester and still receive their deposit back when the semester ends. Students who miss more than two class forfeit their deposit.
