Foodie Friday!

Many of us who have studied another language have learned that food vocabulary is not only fun, but also necessary for survival. While traveling abroad, it is indeed important to try new foods, but it’s also good to know how to order an old stand-by that you know you’ll like.

For me, in China, this stand-by was Mapo Tofu (麻婆豆腐). As a vegetarian, the phrase buyao fang rou (不要放肉), or, “Don’t put meat on it!” also became very important. If you’re into spicy food, Mapo Tofu is for you. It originates from Sichuan province, and has the “numbing spice” that Sichuan is known for. It can be made with or without meat, and luckily for you (and me!) I found a recipe for it here. So roll back your sleeves and heat up your wok! Or, you know, just drool over the picture below. 🙂
