Learning a new language is a life-long investment. It lays the groundwork upon which one can build relationships, foster mutual understanding, and work for peace. Learning Arabic through the Global Giver Fellowship program has allowed me to strive towards these goals in a meaningful way in my work at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. In my role as a Protection Counselor at the Washington office of UNHCR, I oversee incoming requests for assistance and aid from refugees, asylum-seekers, and stateless individuals. Beginning to learn Arabic equips me with skills for both the short and long-term work with refugees and vulnerable populations I do. For these reasons among many, I am thankful to the Global Language Network for the opportunity to be a Global Giver Fellow, and enthusiastic to work towards our common desires for a more understanding and just world.
