Translation Tuesday–Translation Overload!

Hello, my dear readers! I hope your week is off to a wonderful start so far! But in case you’re feeling a bit bored, I have something special in store for you. Translation Tuesday is all about the joys of translation (as well as the embarrassing situations that often result from mis-translations), so with that in mind, I have a lot of joy for you!

I stumbled upon this article, which basically explains 20 hard-to-translate words. So basically, 20 weeks’ worth of Translation Tuesdays. (But don’t worry–I’ll keep ‘em coming!)

Personally, I think my favorite is number 3…but check out the list and let me know which word(s) you like best! Happy reading!

Awesome article. My favorite is #10. Cafuné.

When I worked at the writing center at the American University in Bulgaria, one of the English classes would assign the students to find words in their language that didn’t have direct English equivalents. One of my favorites was a Georgian word that I can’t remember, but it meant the act of doing a grand gesture (often showy and embarrassing) to show a girl how much you love her. Needless to say, their culture is quite passionate. 🙂
