Meet Jessa – GLN Leadership Fellow

It takes a lot to keep the gears of GLN turning, and our Leadership Fellows are an instrumental part of the machinery behind the scenes. Our next Featured Fellow is Jessa Yount.

Jessa will graduate in December with a Bachelor of Science in Cultural Studies from Towson University. She has twice been a student ambassador with People to People which has allowed her to visit Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji and learn about their different cultures first-hand.

Jess: What do you like most about interning for GLN?             287 (2)

Jessa: All the other people I get to work with here. Coworkers can make or break a job, and at my other job, people came and went, but the attitudes of others or of the manager on any given day could really set the tone. GLN is just a really friendly environment, even the students and teachers I interact with are great.

Sofia: What have you learned from your experiences at GLN?

Jessa: Definitely organizational and administrative skills, like scheduling and outreach. I’ve never done outreach before working for GLN. My interactions with teachers and students has certainly reinforced the skill of interacting with people from different cultures, and then navigating those cultural differences to form a positive relationship.

Jess: Can you tell us a funny anecdote?

Jessa: I think the first Wednesday that I was volunteering here, Richard, a French teacher, just stared at my braid and started doing the “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair” chant because it was so long, and that made me laugh. I’ve had a lot of funny conversations here.

Sofia: How do you think that interning for GLN will further your professional goals?

Jessa: Well, it definitely provides me with good experience working for a non-profit, which is what I want to do in the long run. I’m interested in organizations that do humanitarian work in other countries, and whose goals involve bridging cultural divides. Learning a new language can definitely help do that.
