恭喜發財 to all of you in the year of horse!

The Year of Horse will arrive in just two more days! According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the first day of 2014 is this Friday January 31 and the 2014 zodiac is Horse. If you have been following Wednesday’s Word of the Week blog, you would have learned how and when to say “Congratulations (恭喜)“.

During Chinese New Year, when you greet someone, the very first thing to say is 恭喜發財 (literally means congratulations and wishing you prosperity).

Chinese (Cantonese): 恭喜發財, pronounced Gong Hei Fat Choy.

Chinese (Mandarin): 恭喜發財, pronounced Gōng xǐ fā cái.
