A Semester of Learning Adventures

The GLN Approach is a unique teaching method developed by our Founder and Executive Director, Andrew Brown. Since 2001, Andrew has taught multiple languages in a variety of settings and formats. Along the way, he studied over 25 languages to varying degrees, gaining both inspiring and frustrating experiences as a language learner.

One key insight Andrew discovered is that many instructors tend to teach in the way they prefer, rather than in the way students actually learn best. The GLN Approach was born from this realization, combining his extensive experience as both a teacher and learner. It emphasizes a fun, immersive, and communication-driven environment that fosters genuine connection with the language, the culture, and each other.

A core element of the GLN Approach is the “No English Challenge,” which encourages both teachers and students to immerse themselves fully in the target language. By creating a dynamic, engaging classroom experience without relying on English, we promote deeper learning, stronger rapport, and a more authentic connection to the language and its cultural context.

Where, When, and Who

A Semester of Learning Adventures

GLN classes are open to everyone over 18 years of age.

GLN offers three semesters of language classes (Spring, Summer, and Fall) for 6 to 12 weeks, once a week for 2 hours.

Classes are held after 5:00 PM ET (GMT-05) on weeknights and at varying times on Sundays.

All in-person classes are held in the Farragut North area of Washington, D.C.

What is the "No English Challenge" and what kind of language-learning environment should I expect from a GLN class?

At GLN, we believe the best way to learn a language is to actually use it, right from the start. This contrasts with traditional models that might rely heavily on translation. It might feel intimidating at first, but it’s surprisingly effective. You’ll find yourself picking up vocabulary and sentence patterns naturally, just like you did with your first language. You’ll also get more comfortable thinking on your feet and expressing yourself, even with a limited vocabulary!

Do I need to purchase materials for a GLN class?

No! Your teacher works with our team to prepare custom lessons plans. We are proud to offer accessible language learning classes and do not require the purchase of books or online materials.

Do GLN classes include assignments or tests?

No! Our classes focus on building conversational skills and confidence. While some teachers provide out-of-class activities for students to take advantage of, these are not required for completion of a GLN course.

Can I host GLN classes at my work?

Yes! Hosting a GLN class is a great way to build your team's professional and language skills and receive discounts on GLN classes. To learn more, visit our Partner with GLN page.

What is the typical class size and age range of a GLN class?

GLN classes range from small to medium class sizes, with anywhere from 5 to 25 students in a given class. Our students are required to be above the age of 18, and while many of our students are early to mid-career professionals, we engage with many late-career individuals and have a diverse age range of students.

What if I don't see my desired language or class level on the schedule page?

Our team works continuously throughout the semester to find new teachers and offer more classes. To let us know what language or level you would like to see, email us at Learn@TheGLN.org. Can I get a GLN certificate to verify my studies?

Yes! We create personalized class completion certificates upon request for a $20 donation. Email Learn@TheGLN.org to request one.

How much does a GLN class cost and what is the pricing policy?
