Meet Tamara.

Tamara is one of twenty-nine 2014 Teaching Fellows who volunteer with GLN to teach her language and share her culture. Let’s go to her class and learn some Russian.

As you can hear in the audio Tamara Russian Bazaar below, Tamara has been enjoying this semester. She took her students to Saint Nicholas Cathedral in DC for the annual holiday. We chatted about the survival nature of using a language you have been learning in a real setting. It forces you. She says with laughter. She reminds you that you don’t have an option of saying, “Oh, I forgot that word… either you pay, or you don’t get the food.” She says her students got a chance to use the language outside of the class in a real setting, and even bargain a little bit and that was memorable for them.

You don’t have an option of saying, “Oh, I forgot that word… either you pay, or you don’t get the food.”

Tamara has recently brought in a guest speaker to her class. Her guest speaker has been joining the class to give the students a chance to hear a different accent, to hear from another native speaker of the language, and then they go over classroom activities together and can split up the classroom to help students with their pronunciation and building up to having a conversation.

Listen to Tamara below in our podcast, and consider joining us as a GLN Teaching Assistant to help out GLN Teaching Fellows like Tamara. Browse through the benefits and action items then click apply before Sunday December 21st. спасибо
