Bonjour! I am Debora Akotonou Edou, from Benin Republic, a French-speaking country in West Africa where I grew up and earned my BA in Sociology-Anthropology and Licentiate in English Linguistic Studies. I have worked as an educator for 20 years, with over 10 years of classroom experience as a French and English teacher.

In 2014, I founded the Africa Perspectives K-12 school in a remote village in Benin, providing equal and quality access to education for 350 underserved children each year helping them to improve their learning outcomes. I came to the United States in 2019 and completed a MicroMaster in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2021. Currently I am teaching Humanities in French at WIS (Washington International School). My husband, Raphael, and I have been married for 30 years and have three wonderful adult children. I like to worship God, to cook, listen to Christian music and walk around the neighborhood with my husband.

My favorite words in French are: “Très bien meaning Very Good/Well” and “Excellent, meaning outstanding, exceptionally good, or of extremely high quality”. You will hear me saying that in all my classes to encourage you and praise your exceptional performance in my class. So let’s go. I am excited to be part of the GLN team and I look forward to sharing my experience and my passion for the French language and Francophone cultures with the GLN community.
