While Hispanic culture is not my own, I think it is extremely important to learn about it and appreciate it, particularly the cultures of Latin America. In studying Latin America for all of my academic career I realized the lack of knowledge and understanding about the various cultures of Latin America that is prevalent here in the US. We need to get to know our closest neighbor better, because they know much more about us than we do about them, because there are many Spanish speaking immigrants in the US (and DC) today, and because the cultures, histories, and social practices of the region are interesting and important to world and US affairs. Because I love studying Latin America I want to share the joy and love of Spanish language and culture with my peers.
